Vienna is unique in that it is both a city and one of Austria’s nine federal states (Bundesland). The mayor also serves as the State Governor (Landeshauptmann).

Mayor and Governor

Michael Ludwig (SPÖ — Social Democratic Party) has been Mayor of Vienna since May 2018. He was re-elected in 2020. As Mayor, he also serves as the Governor of the federal state of Vienna.

City Council (Gemeinderat)

100 seats elected by proportional representation. The council elects the executive City Senate (Stadtsenat).

The executive branch, consisting of the Mayor, two Deputy Mayors, and executive city councillors overseeing portfolios such as housing, mobility, climate, education, and culture.

City Hall Building

The Wiener Rathaus is a Neo-Gothic masterpiece on the Ringstrasse, built between 1872 and 1883. Its 98-metre tower is topped by the Rathausmann statue. The building houses over 2,000 city administration employees. Its courtyard is one of the largest in Europe. Free guided tours are available.
